Thomasnet, Europages, Kompass, GlobalSpec, Alibaba and ChemCapital: Where Should a Process Equipment Supplier List in 2027?
An honest comparison of eight supplier directories and marketplaces for process equipment makers: buyers, free listings, paid tiers, RFQs and how to decide where the budget goes.

There is no single right directory for a process equipment supplier in 2027. The honest answer is a mix: one broad directory where your main geography's buyers already search, one specialist platform where the enquiry arrives as a structured RFQ (request for quotation) rather than a contact form, and a free profile on the rest. The deciding numbers are category fit and cost per qualified enquiry, not the headline size of the directory.
This article compares Thomasnet, Europages, Kompass, GlobalSpec, IndustryNet, Alibaba, wlw and ChemCapital on the same questions: who the buyers are, what a free listing includes, how paid tiers work, and whether a buyer can send an RFQ through the platform. Prices are quoted only where a platform publishes them or a dated third party report exists; everything else is marked "not published" or "reported".
Why this matters now
Three things changed the directory decision. First, Thomasnet, the North American directory, is now part of Xometry and in January 2026 launched performance based listings, where suppliers set a budget and pay only when buyers interact with their profile [1]. It claims more than 2.2 million registered buyers [2]. Second, buyers have moved towards AI assistants for the first search: Forrester reported in January 2026 that 94% of business buyers used AI in their buying process, up five points on the year before [9]. A profile that an AI tool can read and structure now matters as much as a profile that a human can browse. Third, generalist directories have grown so large (Kompass alone claims more than 57 million companies across 70 countries [5]) that a heat exchanger maker competes for attention with every other company in its postcode.
For a supplier marketing budget that might be £10,000 to £30,000 a year, that means fewer, better chosen listings, and a review metric that tells you within 90 days which one to keep.

| Alibaba.com | Global, export led, strongest in Asia | Volume trade and sourcing | Not stated on the pricing page; three paid tiers (Gold Supplier Basic, Gold Supplier Plus, Verified Supplier) [8] | Pricing varies by region and is set with a local account manager [8] | Yes, an RFQ marketplace; paid tiers get 20 to 60 RFQ responses a month [8] | General, consumer and industrial |
| wlw (Visable) | Germany and the German speaking world [4] | German speaking B2B buyers | Yes, free registration [4] | Packages; prices not published [4] | Not described | General B2B |
| ChemCapital | Global, young platform for process equipment buyers in pharma, chemical and industrial manufacturing | Buyers who issue structured RFQs for equipment and skids | Yes, free supplier profile and product listings | Basic and Growth plans, prices not published; the first three RFQs opened for full review are free as a one time onboarding grace period, then a monthly RFQ allowance, an RFQ unlock fee of EUR 100 per RFQ once the monthly allowance is used, and a 2% platform success fee on attributable transaction value after the grace period, capped at EUR 20,000 per transaction | Yes, structured RFQs with specifications, quantities, delivery requirements and deadlines | Process equipment only |
A few points behind the table. Thomasnet's own business page says a profile can be claimed with no fees and no commitment, and that sponsored listings get far more evaluations than unpaid ones [2]. Under the performance based listings launched in January 2026, advertising spend is metered by buyer interaction, which is fairer than a flat fee but harder to budget [1]. The USD 10,000 figure is one third party site's reference point, not a Thomas price list, so treat it as an order of magnitude [3].
Europages is the strongest free option for a European supplier: registration is free, product text is translated automatically into 21 languages, and the free Request Hub is where suppliers find new orders to answer [4]. Its weakness is breadth. A heat exchanger listing sits beside bakery equipment and office furniture.
GlobalSpec is the one platform built around engineers rather than buyers. Its audience is large and technical, but there is no free product listing and the programme is sold on enquiry [6]. It suits instrument and component makers more than fabricators of bespoke vessels.
Alibaba's RFQ marketplace is real and active, but the paid tiers meter how many RFQs you can answer each month and the fee is set by region rather than published [8]. For bespoke pharma or chemical equipment, the buyer base is mostly looking for standard goods at volume.
ChemCapital is narrow by design. A supplier profile and product listings are free, RFQs arrive as structured documents, and buyers using AI supplier discovery can find and invite a company they have never heard of, provided the profile is verified and the product listings are detailed. The Basic plan adds document download analytics, and the Growth plan adds profile view and shortlist insight and priority placement in buyer search results; plan prices are not published. It is a young platform, and this article makes no claim about how many buyers use it. Judge it the same way as the others: by the enquiries it produces per pound in your first 90 days.

How to decide
Four questions settle most cases.
Where do your buyers actually look? A North American process plant engineer still starts on Thomasnet or a search engine. A German plant buyer uses wlw or Europages. A pharma project team increasingly starts in an AI assistant and asks it for suppliers, which is why Forrester's 94% figure matters [9]. Platforms that structure your data (certifications, capacities, materials, pressure ratings) feed those assistants better than a free text profile.
Category fit. Count how many suppliers already sit in your exact category on each platform. If you are one of 3,000 "heat exchangers" in a general directory, a free listing will rarely surface. If you are one of 30 in a specialist category, even a free listing gets seen.
Cost per qualified enquiry. A qualified enquiry names the equipment, the duty or capacity, a delivery date and a real project. Count only those. A contact form that says "send catalogue" does not count.
Effort to keep listings consistent. Every platform you join is another place where a lapsed ISO 9001 certificate, an old address or a retired product range can sit unnoticed. Three well kept listings beat eight stale ones. Platforms that alert you before a certificate record lapses reduce that effort.
| If you are | Start with | Add later |
|---|---|---|
| A North American job shop or fabricator selling into US plants | Free Thomasnet profile, then a capped performance budget [1] | IndustryNet listing; a specialist platform for your sector |
| A European equipment maker exporting within the EU | Free Europages registration and the Request Hub [4] | wlw if Germany matters; a specialist platform for structured RFQs |
| A maker of instruments, valves or components specified by engineers | GlobalSpec Product Discovery, priced on enquiry [6] | Free profiles on general directories |
| A supplier of vessels, skids, exchangers or packages to pharma and chemical plants | Free ChemCapital profile with detailed product listings | One regional general directory where your buyers browse |
| An Asian manufacturer selling standard equipment at volume | Alibaba paid tier with RFQ access, priced by region [8] | Regional directories in target export markets |
Practical example
An illustrative UK maker of shell and tube heat exchangers sells to chemical and pharmaceutical plants in the UK, Germany and the US. Average order £40,000, gross margin 25%, so £10,000 gross margin per order. It wins roughly one in five qualified enquiries. That makes each qualified enquiry worth about £2,000 in expected margin. The company caps acquisition cost at 40% of that, so any platform costing more than £800 per qualified enquiry over 90 days is cut.
Annual listing budget: £15,000, allocated across three platforms (all figures illustrative).
| Line | Annual budget | 90 day spend | Qualified enquiries in 90 days | Cost per qualified enquiry | Decision at day 90 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thomasnet performance budget (US buyers) | £7,000 | £1,750 | 3 | £583 | Keep, review targeting |
| Europages Boosted package (German buyers) | £4,000 | £1,000 | 1 | £1,000 | Pause the paid package, keep the free listing |
| ChemCapital RFQ unlock fees and a paid plan (illustrative allowance; plan prices not published) | £1,500 | £375 | Measured the same way | Calculated from the actual RFQs received | Keep if under £800 |
| Listing upkeep: photos, datasheets, certificate updates | £2,500 | £625 | Not applicable | Spread across all three | Continue |
| Total | £15,000 | £3,750 |
The point of the table is the rule, not the numbers. Each platform gets one quarter, the same definition of a qualified enquiry, and the same threshold. The free listings cost nothing but upkeep, so they stay regardless. The paid budgets move towards whichever platform clears the £800 line.
Two cautions. Thomasnet's performance model means spend can run ahead of budget in a busy quarter, so set the cap in the platform, not on a spreadsheet [1]. And a success fee model, such as ChemCapital's 2% platform fee on attributable transaction value won through the platform (capped at EUR 20,000 per transaction), only costs money when business is won, so it belongs in the margin calculation rather than the listing budget.
Where ChemCapital fits
ChemCapital does not replace a regional directory for a supplier whose buyers still browse one. It adds the piece the general directories lack for process equipment: RFQs that arrive with specifications, quantities, delivery requirements and deadlines, quotations submitted with line items, assumptions and attachments in one form with revision history, and purchase orders confirmed in the platform with milestone updates. A verified company profile with detailed product listings is what buyers' AI supplier discovery reads when it builds a shortlist, so the free profile is worth completing properly even before you spend anything.
See how it works for suppliers, and read how suppliers win industrial contracts for what to put in the listing once it exists.

Frequently asked questions
Is Thomasnet free for suppliers?
Thomas's own business page says a company profile can be claimed with no fees and no commitment. Advertising is separate. In January 2026 Thomas launched performance based listings, where you set a budget and pay only when buyers interact with your profile.
Which directory is best for a European process equipment maker?
Europages is the strongest free starting point in Europe, with free registration, automatic translation into 21 languages and a Request Hub for buyer requests. Add a specialist platform if you want RFQs that arrive with full specifications rather than contact forms.
How do I know which listing is working?
Define a qualified enquiry (named equipment, duty, delivery date, real project) and divide each platform's 90 day spend by the number it produced. Keep the ones below the cost threshold your margin supports and pause the rest.
